DB Regio not only operates regional trains, but is also the largest provider of local public transport bus services in many regions of Germany.
As part of the replacement of the error-prone, inefficient and unintuitive on-board computers, DB Regio Bayern is undertaking a complete digitalisation of the associated business processes. Through the use of modern system architectures and hardware, the aim is to create a future-proof system that frees DB Regio from its dependence on suppliers and transforms the market. As part of this process, the company is transitioning from a system user to a system provider, including the establishment of the necessary structures.

The aim of the project is to make DB Regio’s operations more efficient in the long term and to align the IT landscape consistently with business processes. To this end, a future-proof system architecture is being developed that offers maximum flexibility, avoids vendor lock-in and ensures the shortest possible time-to-market for changes. The approach follows a service-oriented architecture to ensure adaptability, scalability and extensibility in the long term. The focus is on developing an intuitive system that directly addresses the operational needs and pain points of day-to-day use, particularly for bus drivers and control centre staff. A key component is the transformation of fare calculation in public transport: existing fare matrices will be replaced by a map-based calculation system to reduce complexity and increase transparency. At the same time, the existing system landscape is being restructured to eliminate redundancies, reduce the potential for errors and increase overall efficiency. To this end, an integrated software platform is being developed and the associated hardware architecture defined, which together will enable stable, flexible and future-proof operations.
